How to tell a story with photography

Here’s a photo that I took for a pretty handsome friend of mine.

Now we all know what’s going to happen here, and this is what makes this photo powerful, it speaks to all of us and there is a mutual understanding of the situation, nothing comes cluttering the image.

The focus is on the story itself, as he’s about to propose to his girlfriend and, in the process, break the heart of his countless fans, including mine, who still thought they had a chance…

This photo tells the story of a promise that ‘s about to happen, the beginning of a long journey.

To tell a story with photography I truly believe in K.I.S.S , not just because I’m French, no I’m talking about Keep It Super Simple : K.I.S.S,  in most cases keeping it simple is the key to achieving your goal, the easier it is to read the image the clearer is the story, by getting rid of the surrounding and just focusing on the subject we can tell what is going on, the blurry landscape overlooking the city with mountains in the back, and the warm light give us an indication about the location and time of the day and in this situation it’s enough.

What is important here ? well the small black box containing that ring is what really makes the photo, remove it and the photo looses its story, its meaning. This is why to emphasize on the case and the importance of the situation I decided to take just the photo of the back of the subject as it also accentuates the fact that he’s just looking away reflecting on this very special moment.

When your goal is to tell a story, you should ask yourself what is important, what is essential to the comprehension of that story and compose your photo accordingly.

By the way : She said yes !
